Mendocino Coast TransitionTowns
Sat, Apr 27 2013 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join us to graphically connect the dots, creating a community map showing what’s needed, opportunities for collaboration, local businesses, local natural resources, and other important components of the local scene.
Do you really know what products and services are available locally? Without that information, how can each one of us support local businesses? Without that information, how can we determine what our community needs in the future? Come join us for a process of “connecting the dots,” where we graphically depict the Mendocino-Fort Bragg business community, and determine what is — and what is not — available locally. With this information, we can (1) make better purchasing decisions, and more deliberately support local businesses, (2) identify new opportunities for collaboration with local businesses, and (3) better focus our efforts on making our community more sustainable, resilient, and local. Come and put your local business on the map, and learn about other local businesses too!
Leading the mapping discussion will be Kelley Rajala, Founder of the Share Exchange, in Santa Rosa, a community meeting space, as well as a retail cooperative that sells only goods made in Sonoma County. The Share Exchange carries the products of over 200 local artists and has over 40 tenants. Kelley has worked with Transition Sebastopol, mapping the Sonoma County local resources. She has also consulted with a variety of local businesses about the ways they can share resources and better market their products and services. In addition to being a longtime activist for social justice, Kelly has also been working with a variety of local governments on the establishment of business incubators to encourage and nurture early-stage local entrepreneurs. She has established a variety of small businesses herself, and in 2010 she was the winner of the Trailblazer Award, conferred by the Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy.
