About the Book

David Gregory and John Bear came independently to Mendocino in the mid-1970s, and decided that this was a place they wished to live. And so they did: six years for David, eleven for John, with regular return visits.

David Gregory studied painting, printmaking, and architecture at the University of Illinois. He has created more than 3,000 paintings and etchings. His work is in hundreds of private collections.

John Bear wrote thirty books for major publishers, and has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, Late Night with Letterman, and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. And he opened and ran an Ice cream parlor on Main Street in Mendocino.

In 2011, the two joined forces to publish a fine art coffee table book which features over 70 color reproductions of David Gregory’s paintings of the village he called home for six years. David’s paintings reflect his love of Mendocino and the northern California coast, while John Bear’s text compliments the artwork with observations and musings that are sometimes historical, sometimes whimsical, and always entertaining.
